Gord Downie Tribute Concert
For the Downie Wenjack Fund
On Friday, Jan. 26, 2018 a celebration concert will be held at Mavrick’s Music Hall in Barrie,ON to pay tribute to Gord Downie. Gord was a Canadian icon who passed away in October 2017. In addition to his work as the lead singer and lyricist of The Tragically Hip, Gord Downie released six solo albums.
On October 13, 2016, Gord and his brother Mike, along with the Wenjack family, announced the founding of the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund to support reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. The fund is a part of Downie’s legacy and commitment to Canada’s First Peoples. Charlie was a young aboriginal boy who died trying to escape a residential school, who became the centre of Downie’s Secret Path project. The Downie Wenjack Fund operates out of the Tides Canada Foundation.
All proceeds from the Gord Downie Tribute Concert will go to The Downie Wenjack Fund.
The benefit is being supported by Gord’s brother Mike Downie, who will be in attendance. The concert will feature various local and national artists performing Gord Downie songs and Tragically Hip songs. Multi-instrumentalist Brett Caswell will lead a all-star band who will perform with the artists. This promises to be a very special evening.
